Starting a Catering Business? Here’s a Guide for You

Do you have a flair for fine cooking and entertaining guests? Then you may have considered starting a catering business sometime in your life. If you don’t know where to start, don’t fret since you’ve clicked just the right page!

In 2023, starting a catering business is an excellent choice since the initial overheads are much lower than opening a restaurant. The growth potential in catering businesses is limitless, giving you more leeway to build your business from the bottom to the top.

    Research the Market.

Now that you’re set on starting a catering business, you should check out your competition. Naturally, when starting a business, you would open it in your area. As such, look for your competitors in your area.

Furthermore, if you’re a person who likes things to be organized, creating a spreadsheet would be helpful. You can include the competitors’ names, the type of food they serve, the price range, the company’s size, and their demographic.

When you research the market, you will get an idea of the type of catering business in your area. As such, it would help you evaluate whether or not there’s a demand for the type of catering business you want to build. It would also help you decide whether you would impact the market.

Researching the market answers the question if you’re any different from your competitors, which, if you don’t know, is incredibly important if you want to stand out and gain many customers.

    Make a Checklist.

When catering off-site events or even on-site, meticulous organization and planning would be needed. You must prepare numerous catering equipment and supplies to ensure you’re fully equipped to feed people. With all the things you have to prepare, there may be times that you would forget what you need to bring and prepare. How can you resolve this? Well, you have to prepare a checklist!

First things first, how will you serve your food? You would need table settings, e.g., tablecloths, napkins, dinnerware, glassware, charger plates, water pitchers, etc. Of course, the grandiosity of your tableware would depend on the type of functions you have to prepare for. Naturally, if you only have to prepare food for a simple picnic or barbecue, you only need to prepare water glasses, dinner plates, and flatware.

Furthermore, when choosing what utensils and tableware to purchase, ensure you purchase them from a company that aligns with your theme. If you’re looking for modern designs and elegant materials, browse and purchase from Tablekraft Cutlery for your cutlery and even drinkware!

When catering, you may also need to prepare displays and decor. That is if they decide to rent your items. Customers would tend to rent decors from you rather than find another rental company for designs. So, don’t forget those display risers, display stands, vases, centerpieces, etc. It’s much better to be prepared rather than to stress about it in the future.

Another crucial must-have for a catering business is transport supplies and cooking and holding equipment. Purchase insulated food pan carriers to make your life easier! Find one that can hold both hot and cold food. An induction cooker would also serve you well if you plan on having a crepe, stir-fry, or omelet station as an option in your catering business.

    Find Your Specialty.

When a person decides to open a catering business, many would already know what their niche would be. Furthermore, if the specialty you chose has less competition but it’s beloved and interests many, it would become easier to establish a solid base of loyal clients.

Thus, ask yourself what kind of food you plan on serving, what functions you will serve, and what your capacity is. Do you plan on focusing on a niche market, e.g., only serving gluten-free or vegan cuisine? Or do you plan on serving everyone?

Furthermore, if you’re just starting in the catering business, a smaller function is better to ease you into the hectic life of a catering company. Then when your business starts to grow, you can expand it to however large you can manage.

Once you’ve decided your focus, the type of food you plan on making, and how upscale the functions you plan on catering are, you can start drafting a menu that can suit your choices.

Do You Need a License and Permit?

The legal requirements that catering companies need would depend on the state. Thus, you must investigate your state’s licenses and permits for catering businesses. There are states where you aren’t allowed to prepare the meals in your kitchen and equipment that you would typically use for your personal meal preparation.

You must get the following licenses to start your business, regardless of state-to-state variations.

    • A business license issued by your county, state, city, or municipality to start your operations.
    • A health permit on where you’ll prepare the food or if you plan on transporting it.
    • A zoning permit for where you’ll use the cooking facilities.

    Final Thoughts

Do you think you need to start a catering business in your area? Do you think your business idea can topple other companies in your area? If so, use this guide to start your catering company today! Starting a new business is no easy feat; just take it one step at a time.
